God has reclaimed one of his Angels
Michelle Grinzy’s story is one that I would never to justice explaining or retelling. However what I can say is I have never before in my life seen such a young, determined, never take no, tenacious, in my entire life, yet the sweetest and most thoughtful of any person. Caring with no fault, doing good for strangers, friends and family, alike.
A few weeks before God came for her, there was a party at her parents house. While Michelle was up and alert, even joking at the impromptu ‘Roasting’, she called it, of many friends, family and new friends she only has a moment in time to touch their hearts. It was the best any of us had seen Michelle in several months. Laughing, telling stories, hugging and of course tears of joyfulness everywhere as we all heard many stories, several for the first time, giving us a deeper appreciation of Michelle and her ‘activities’ of life and of the heart.
One story she told was of a caretaker, when Michelle was in a much better place, but knew the end would be coming sooner than she thought. The Caretaker said, ‘You should travel the world, see places’. Michelle with her quick with retorted with, ‘Lady all I want is taco’. Michelle’s sense of humor prevailed through everything, the treatments, flying around the northern hemisphere for answers, her pain and feeding tube.
It was Michelle Grinzy’s Final wishes was to let everyone know about this extremely rare disease. In her words she said, “Would it have affected my out come if I knew sooner, no, but it would have changed the quality of my life.” Please honor her, by reading a prepared explanation by her.
Strong and Transformed from Mito and MNGIE
What is ‘Mito’ (Mitochondrial Disease)?
Mitochondrial diseases result from failures of the mitochondria, specialized compartments present in every cell of the body (except red blood cells). Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less and less energy is generated with in the cell.
What is ‘MNGIE’ (Mitochondrial Neuro Gastro-Intestinal Encephelopathy)?
Mitochondrial Neuro Gastro-Intestinal Encephelopathy (MNGIE) disease is a condition that affects several parts of the body, particularly the digestive system and nervous systems. Abnormalities of the digestive system are among the most common ans severe features of the MNGIE disease. Almost all affected people have a condition known as gastrointestinal dysmotility, in which the muscles and nerves of the digestive system do not move food through the digestive tract efficiently.
How many people are affected with MNGIE?
It is estimated that 2,500 people throughout the world have Mito. MNGIE is a rare form of Mito. There are only 70 people in the world known to be diagnosed with it. Twelve (12) of them are in the U.S., Michelle is on of them.
What is the cause?
It is thought to be genetic, but there is no evidence of it in out (the Grinzy’s) family.
How is it diagnosed?
A blood test for Thymidine Phosphorylase levels.
What is the treatment and prognosis?
It is a progressive, degenerative disease with no treatment and poor prognosis.
Is there Hope? There is always hope as long as there is life and love.
